Modal
A regenerated cellulose fibre, typically from beech pulp. It's a modified viscose process with higher wet strength, known for its softness.
How it’s made
- 1Beech pulp is processed with a viscose-type (carbon disulfide) method, modified for higher fibre strength.
- 2Spun into very soft, smooth yarns.
What to look for
- TENCEL™ Modal or other traceable pulp. Lenzing has marketed an 'Edelweiss' process for its modal with high chemical recovery.
- Blends with cotton
Pros
- Very soft
- Resists shrinkage better than viscose
Cons
- Pills in some knits
- Chemical process impact depends on the producer
Typical use
- Streetwear:
- Underwear, lounge tees.
Sustainability
Better than generic viscose when the producer runs good chemical recovery.
