Polyamide (nylon)
A strong, abrasion-resistant synthetic used in running shorts, tights, socks and shell jackets. 'Polyamide' and 'nylon' are the same fibre family.
How it’s made
- 1Polymerised from petrochemicals (PA6 or PA6.6), or from recycled waste such as fishing nets and carpet (e.g. ECONYL®).
- 2Melt-spun into filaments and knitted or woven.
What to look for
- Recycled PA (e.g. ECONYL®)
- Higher denier for durability, lower denier for lightness
Pros
- Very strong and abrasion resistant
- Soft hand feel in fine knits
Cons
- Holds odour
- Microfibre shedding
- Energy-intensive production
Typical use
- Running:
- Tights, shorts, socks, jacket shells.
- Streetwear:
- Outerwear, bags.
Sustainability
Recycled feedstock lowers impact. Virgin PA6.6 production emits N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas.
