Egyptian / Giza cotton
Cotton grown in Egypt's Nile delta. 'Giza' plus a number names a specific variety. Many are long or extra-long staple, but 'Egyptian cotton' alone doesn't guarantee that.
How it’s made
- 1Grown in Egypt. Giza varieties are numbered (e.g. Giza 45, Giza 87), and some are extra-long staple.
- 2Combed and ring-spun into fine yarns for shirting and jersey.
What to look for
- A named Giza variety or the Cotton Egypt Association mark.
- 'Egyptian cotton' on its own has a history of mislabelling.
Pros
- Smooth, lustrous yarn
- Good for fine shirting
Cons
- Origin fraud has been documented
- Quality range is wide
Typical use
- Streetwear:
- Shirts, fine T-shirts.
Sustainability
