Fine rib (Feinripp)
A rib knit with very narrow alternating columns of knit and purl stitches. It stretches widthways and springs back, which made it the classic fabric for vests and underwear and now for slim tees and tank tops.
How it’s made
- 1Knitted on a double-bed (rib) circular machine: needles on both beds form the alternating columns.
- 2'1×1 rib' alternates one knit and one purl column. Feinripp uses a fine machine gauge and thin cotton yarn, so the ribs are barely visible.
- 3Often knitted as a tube (with no side seams), like loopwheel jersey.
What to look for
- Fine, combed cotton yarn
- Good recovery: the fabric should spring back when stretched
- Tubular construction without side seams
Pros
- Close, comfortable fit
- Stretch without elastane
- Soft and breathable
Cons
- Can lose shape if washed hot or tumbled
- Clings, so the fit is slim
Typical use
- Streetwear:
- Tank tops, vests, slim tees, underwear.
Sustainability
Usually all-cotton, which keeps it recyclable and lets it biodegrade.
